This morning, the sweetest and most affectionate pet I've ever known, Monty the rat, passed away peacefully in my arms. Rats are meant to be kept in twos, because they are such social creatures, but after Monty's elder companion Squire passed away when Monty was still very young, Monty was all alone. He made up for his loneliness by clinging to me with warmth and tenderness his whole life.
Every day when I was at the computer, he would come up to my hand, push the mouse away, and rest his head on my wrist. He did not spend his life in a cage, and instead had the free reign of my room, living like a little prince and having his every whim catered to. Of all the rats I've had, never had one been so kind and loving as Monty.
He will be missed. I know he left this world content. He spent his last night sleeping on my chest and in my arms, and the next morning, he died looking into my eyes while I slowly pet him as his breath faded away.
