As soon as I read your story I was shocked as it sounds like myself talking about my beautiful dog called Holly. I like yourself cherished my dog and had to let her go by putting her to sleep. It really is the hardest thing you hopefully will ever have to do, the guilt is the worst part of all. I don't know about you, but you know intellectually that you have done the right thing, of course you have, however, the emotional/maternal side is tearing at your heart and questioning all your decisions. Its just so hard to get your head around. Holly died nearly 10 months ago and I am still devastated by the loss, not one day goes by when I don't think about her, I miss her desperately. Give yourself time to grieve, its ok to miss what sounds like the best dog you could have ever wished for.
My thoughts are with you. XXXX

I am so sorry for your loss. Bubba seemed like the ultimate faithful companion. I am going through about the same thing with my cat. (see Mitze-Eyes of Blue in Poetry) She was abused also. I still miss her but every day is better. Thank you for writing about letting her go with dignity it has helped me with my decision that I had to make. Best of luck to you. I sure hope Rainbow Bridge is true.
